Shaping a Field Scan of AI in the Arts
a2ru Pre-Conference
Wednesday, October 21, 2:00–5:00pm. A working session for the a2ru community to shape and inform the Observatory’s approach.
The Observatory is building a cross-sector scan of the K–16 pathway that prepares AI-ready creatives, spanning higher education, K–12 formal and informal learning, and industry and professional practice.
The session includes:
- A briefing on the Lab’s scope and goals
- An overview of what the field scan is trying to establish
- Breakout groups examining gaps, missing aspects, engagement opportunities, and where the scan might focus
Of particular relevance to educators, leads of centers and campus initiatives, and research practitioners working at the intersection of arts and AI. Feedback from the session shapes the study — its taxonomy, recruitment, and the questions the scan asks.

March 11–12, 2027 at the National Academies of Sciences, 2101 Constitution Avenue NW, Washington DC.
Convened in collaboration with the Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences (CPNAS), bringing together the Observatory’s research team, a2ru campus AI leads, and partners.
The gathering is the latest in the Centering the Arts in the Age of AI series of conversations, informing the Observatory’s work and engaging productively with the tools of artificial intelligence. This edition is led by the Observatory in partnership with a2ru.
Partners in this effort: a2ru, Creative Generation, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Arkansas, and the Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences.

Nine advisors from arts education, creative industries, and AI practice have joined the Observatory’s Technical Working Group, including three honorary advisors connecting the project to other NEA Research Labs.
